But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, A PECULIAR PEOPLE. -1 Peter 2:9
When I think peculiar, I think of something weird, strange or odd. Actually, Merriam Webster’s Dictionary, currently, defines peculiar as: odd; curious; eccentric, unusual.
However, Webster’s 1828 Dictionary states that the word peculiar comes from the Latin word, peculiaris, an adjective meaning, privately owned or special that is derived from the word for “property,” peculium. Further, it defines peculiar as, belonging to a person and to him only; special. How did this ever come to mean freak?
In 1 Peter 2:9 the Greek word for peculiar is peripoiēsis which means a preservation, possession, one’s own property, thing to be obtained, purchased, acquired, and to make around oneself.
By the world’s definition followers of Jesus Christ may be odd, but Peter says that we are a peculiar people. We are God’s private property purchased at a very high price. We are special. We belong to Him only. Peter also states that we are chosen, picked out, and all God’s favorites. You are His favorite. I am His favorite. We are all his favorites. He chose us. We chose Him. He chose all. All did not choose Him. In the end, it is choice that separates one from God, not God.
We are a holy nation. Holy meaning pure, clean, and set apart for God, to be exclusively His. We are all unique. We are unusual. We are special because we are His, a royal priesthood chosen for service in His kingdom.
Our most prized and favorite things in our home may be special to us but no one else. Who loves a piece of roof tile? I do. I found it on the beach of the first island that Kris and I were blessed to visit in French Polynesia. How about a broken shell? It is priceless to me. Honestly, it represents a special time with God, a unique time with Kris, and enduring LOVE. Think about your peculiar treasures.
We all might look a little odd or act a little different. However, we are God’s precious possession.
I enCOURAGE you to embrace the true definition of peculiar. Look at yourself as high valued property of our Father God, Creator of all. You are priceless to Him. Treat yourself differently. Treats yourself as a sparkling gem of our Daddy. View all others as God’s peculiar treasures and watch as he melts your heart for His people. We all are His peculiar treasures.
“And they shall be Mine, says the Lord of hosts, in that day when I publicly recognize and openly declare them to be My jewels (My special possession, My peculiar treasure). And I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him.”-Malachi 3:17
