I relate  to the book of Revelation like a movie or television show because it’s how the Holy Spirit helps me understand it.  In Revelation 1:19 the LORD charged John, “Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this.” (Revelation 1:19 NKJV)  John was to write about past, present and future events.  So far, we have looked at future events.  In Chapter 12 of Revelation, John flashes back and gives us a cast of the characters in the movie.

“John writes the historical record in order for it to support the story of the future.  By inspiration of the Holy Spirit, John ties together past and future events, giving insight into the entire story of Israel, and Jesus Christ in relation to the Revelation.” – Dr. Hilton Sutton, Revelation Revealed, page 143

The Woman:  Israel

“Now a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a garland of twelve stars. Then being with child, she cried out in labor and in pain to give birth.” (Revelation 12:1-2 NKJV)

This is the same woman that appears in Joseph’s dream in  Genesis 37:9-10 that describes the family of Jacob/Israel.

The Child:  Jesus

The child is the Seed to be birthed out of Israel, Jesus the Messiah who will rule and reign and was caught up to the throne of God. (Acts 2:32-33)

“And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and [to] his throne.”  (Revelation 12:5 KJV and see Revelation 19:15-16)

The Dragon: Satan and His Fall

“And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth:and the dragon stood before the woman, which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born” (Revelation 12:3-4 KJV)

The dragon has tried to stop the Seed of the woman since he was cursed after the fall of man. God told the dragon, the serpent, or whatever you want to call him, that the Seed, Jesus would crush, break, and gape open his head.  Jesus would come to destroy the Destroyer and the serpent has known it from the beginning.

“And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.” (Genesis 3:15 NKJV)

 Who is the dragon?

“And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So, the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” (Revelation 12:7-9 NKJV)

His fall is described in Isaiah 14:9-17.  He “willed” or chose his way right out of heaven.  His mission since then is to “get” the worship, steal, kill and destroy.  If we are not worshipping the Lord with the choices in our lives, we are by default worshipping Satan.  Ouch.  When we choose our will over God’s will, who gets the “glory?”  Example:  I know the will of God, “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.” (3 John 1:2 NKJV)  When I know the right thing to eat, but “I will” to eat  otherwise, I am following the path of destruction Satan has planned for me and not God.  “I will” to do what I want to do and not God’s best and the path He laid out for me.

Need more examples?  I have plenty.  We either worship God with our lives or live for ourselves and that doesn’t bother Satan at all.  It is what he wills.  Ultimately, it is our choice.  Whom are we following?

I enCOURAGE you to choose the LORD, every time and in every situation.  He is our Salvation.  Satan’s will  is that you choose to do your own thing and ignore the will of God.  The Lord wills that you choose Him, His way, and His word.  Loving God gave you free will and choice.  It is your will, and it is your choice.  Whom do you choose?

“Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve… But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15 NKJV)
