“John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth.” (Revelation 1:4-5 NKJV)
In yesterday’s encouragement, we discussed part one of WHO the Revelation letter was from. Today, we will examine part two of WHO sent the revealing letter to the churches, the seven Spirits who are before His throne.
John really wanted the churches to know the full backing behind the letter, God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It was the Holy Trinity! The Trinity is challenging to understand. The LORD is three, woven in to a glorious One. Think of it like this. My name is Tamela Denise Lowe Phillips. However, I am mother, wife, and daughter. I am called many other things, too. As a mother, I do not perform wifely duties. As a wife, I do not act as a daughter. I am many in one. I hope that helps.
In Isaiah 11:2, we learn about the seven spirits, or characteristics of the Holy Spirit that rested on Jesus and is spoken of in Revelation 1:4.
The Spirit of the LORD.
The very wind and breath of He who was and is and is to come. Holy Spirit’s source is God Himself.
“And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind… And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:2-4 NKJV)
The Spirit of Wisdom.
Wisdom is the right use or exercise of knowledge. Simply, it’s how to use what you know truthfully and rightly. It is knowing what to do with what you know.
“The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One [is] understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10 NKJV)
The Spirit of Understanding.
Understanding is intelligence and insight.
The Spirit of Counsel
The Spirit is Counsel by definition is the Spirit of advice, of the LORD’s plans, purposes,a nd directions.
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” (John 14:26 NKJV)
The Spirit of Might
I love this one. It is the Spirit of strength, valor, bravery, and courage. It is the Spirit of a warrior and a champion! This attribute of the Holy Spirit empowered Jesus, and us, to take the knowledge, understanding, wisdom, counsel, fear of the Lord and fearlessly do what need be done.
“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he (Holy Spirit) that is in you, than he that is in the world.” (1 John 4:4 KJV)
The Spirit of Knowledge
Knowledge is a clear perception of truth and facts. It is insight and illumination of the mind. It is information learned.
“The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge, [But] fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7 NKJV)
The Spirit of the Fear of the LORD
The fear of the LORD is the reverence, respect, awe and just being amazed by the LORD alone. Nothing, and I mean nothing, deserves fear but the LORD alone.
“What then shall we say to these things? If God [is] for us, who [can be] against us?” Romans 8:31 (NKJV)
Jesus began His ministry by saying, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me…”(Luke 4:18)
Seven is the number of perfection and completion. The seven spirits of Holy Spirit perfectly and completely, empowered Jesus do all He did. Jesus went to the Father, so Holy Spirit could live in us, us in Him and so we could be empowered to greater works for the kingdom.
So far, we have seen how LORD has revealed Himself in the greetings to the churches, as Jehovah, the Father and Jehovah, the Holy Spirit.
I enCOURAGE you to mediate on HOLY SPIRIT. Welcome Holy Spirit in. He is often, wrongly, left out of the Trinity equation. Holy Spirit cannot be left out. Holy Spirit is Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Might and Fear of the Lord. Holy Spirit empowered Jesus in His ministry. The Holy Spirit inside us gives us wisdom, understanding, counsel, might and fear of the Lord to live the life we were called to live. There is power in Holy Spirit.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV)
